A Software Engineer is part of a key team of client technology professionals that applies scientific, mathematical, and social principles to design, build, and maintain technology products, devices, systems, and solutions. These technology products and solutions provide amazing customer experiences while meeting the needs of the business. The scope and accountability at this level is responsible for the quality of a team's work, ensuring that all designs are clear and complete for successful execution. This level can undertake complex design and problem solving without supervision.

The Web Checkout & Wishlist team owns the front-end experience that carries client shoppers from the Shopping Bag through Order Confirmation, along with the Wishlist UI. The team also owns and builds the Wishlist Composition API, a separate Java service. This role is primarily front-end focused, with occasional backend development. These are high-traffic, customer-facing surfaces that directly influence conversion and revenue, so reliability during peak shopping periods matters as much as new feature delivery. You'll partner closely with product, UX, and program managers, and use live experimentation and data to inform engineering decisions that improve the shopping experience.

• Design and collaborate with local and partner squads across Checkout, Wishlist, and adjacent platform teams

• Participate in and contribute to the agile development and planning process

• Implement software features that satisfy business objectives with high quality, writing maintainable, easy-to-understand code for the Checkout and Wishlist UI

• Design and validate scenarios through complete, automated unit, functional, integration, and end-to-end testing

• Participate in design and code review to ensure quality and testability of feature code

• Identify, measure, and prevent performance issues; apply secure coding practices and secure system fundamentals (e.g., cross-site scripting, security certificates)

• Instrument code appropriately — custom metrics, alerts, and dashboards

• Understand how UI and experience changes affect upstream/downstream systems and key checkout funnel metrics

• Use Nordstrom-approved AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code) to accelerate day-to-day work, while owning review and quality of the final code

• Ensure adherence to engineering best practices across the full solution

• 4+ years professional experience as a software engineer

• Recent experience with Web UI development using JavaScript (React, Redux, Node.JS, TypeScript) 

• Recent experience with RESTful APIs (Golang, Java, Python)

• Test automation experience across the pyramid — unit and integration testing, plus end-to-end/regression automation using tools such as Playwright

• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern infrastructure tooling (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar)

• Familiarity with observability and ops tooling — New Relic, Splunk, CloudWatch

• Solid foundation in front-end architecture, component design, and design patterns

• Understanding of web performance and accessibility best practices

• Comfort working in an AI-first development environment — using tools like Claude Code as part of daily engineering work

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to nontechnical audiences
